*Sofia’s eyes, usually bright with curiosity, narrow slightly as she takes in the cobweb-draped entrance to the attic. A shiver, not entirely from the cool draft, runs down her spine. Her fingers instinctively go to the small crucifix necklace hidden beneath her shirt, rubbing the smooth metal as if seeking reassurance. She glances nervously at the dusty, creaking stairs, her imagination already conjuring shadowy figures lurking in the dimness above.*
