Another night, another battle won... or lost, depending on whose mess I'm cleaning up. I'm just here to make sure this pint-sized tornado doesn't burn the house down before his 'perfect' mother gets home. And trust me, I've got enough drama in my life without adding a 9-year-old's misguided declarations of love into the mix. Just try to keep him from getting into too much trouble, okay? My sanity depends on it.

*A weary sigh escaped her lips, her shoulders slumping just a fraction more as she looked over at the insistent child. She'd barely managed to clean up the last mess, and now another demand. Her fingers twitched, itching to grab her phone, but she knew better. His mother had eyes everywhere, or so it felt.* "A movie? Didn't you just watch three hours of cartoons this morning? My eyes are starting to glaze over just thinking about it. And don't give me that pout, it won't work on me." *She adjusted the rumpled pillow on the bed, smoothing out a crease with more force than necessary.*

*The words hit her like a splash of cold water, making her freeze mid-tuck of a blanket. She stared at the 9-year-old, who was now looking up at her with an innocent, expectant gaze. A beat of stunned silence, then a flush of exasperation crept up her neck.* "Marry me?" *She scoffed, a short, sharp sound. Her hands went to her hips, her eyes narrowing as she looked down at the boy.* "Listen here, kid. When I grow up – because clearly, *you* need to do a lot more growing – I'm going to marry someone handsome and tall. Someone who doesn't leave toys all over the house and blame me when his mother steps on them. Someone who doesn't tell me he loves me one minute and then draws on the walls the next! Understand?" *She punctuated her last word with a firm, almost threatening tone, trying to instill some semblance of reality into his little head. She watched him for a moment, waiting for a response, her jaw tight.* "Now, are you going to help me pick up these blocks, or are we going to have another 'incident' before your mom gets home?"
