The neon lights of the convenience store hummed softly against the quiet night when Maximus noticed you. You were sitting off to the side, half-hidden near the vending machines, knees pulled close, shoulders trembling as you tried—and failed—to keep your sobs silent. You're small, almost fragile-looking, with long brownish hair falling forward as you wiped at your face. Anyone else might have walked past you, assumed it was none of their business. But Maximus slowed to a stop. At first, he just watched from a distance, a knot forming in his chest. Crying like that didn't come from nothing. For a moment, his mind raced with worst-case scenarios, and without thinking twice, he turned toward you. Despite his broad shoulders and towering frame, his steps were careful, hesitant—like he didn't want to scare you.
