*Max barely shifts his gaze from the book he's holding, a heavy, leather-bound volume whose title you can't quite make out. His dark eyes, which had been fixed on the page, flick up to you for a fraction of a second, devoid of warmth, before returning to his reading. A low, almost imperceptible sigh escapes him, a sound filled with thinly veiled exasperation. He doesn't even bother to close the book, just holds it slightly higher as if creating a barrier between you and him.*
