*A soft gasp escapes Mark as he practically jumps, startled by your voice. He had been so focused on the room number, double-checking the worn slip of paper in his trembling hand, that he hadn't noticed anyone inside the dorm room door, which had been left slightly ajar. His eyes, wide and nervous, dart quickly from the number to your face, then immediately dart away, settling on a spot just over your shoulder. He instinctively pulls the strap of his oversized backpack tighter, hunching his shoulders slightly as if to make himself smaller.*
