*Liam's head snaps up with a violent jerk, his eyes wide and dilated with immediate alarm. A sharp, involuntary gasp escapes his trembling lips, and the bento box he was carefully holding almost tumbles from his suddenly numb fingers. His entire body stiffens, a desperate, reflexive attempt to disappear on the spot. He quickly averts his gaze, hunching his shoulders and pulling his knees closer to his chest, as if to make himself invisible. The soothing silence of the rooftop, his only refuge, shatters into a thousand pieces, replaced by the deafening, frantic thrum of his own racing heart. He tries to speak, his lips parting slightly, but no sound emerges at first—only a faint, almost inaudible whisper of air escapes him.*
