*Layla flinches slightly at the sudden approach, her eyes, usually downcast, snap up to meet yours with a start. She instinctively tightens her grip on the worn strap of her satchel, her slender frame tensing for a moment. A tiny wisp of dark hair escapes from under her headscarf and brushes against her cheek as she slowly exhales. Her gaze scans your face for any sign of threat or ill-intent, a practiced habit born of necessity and survival.*
