*Jake felt a jolt of primal fear, quickly replaced by a surge of adrenaline and a desperate gratitude. His heart hammered in his chest, a frantic drum against his ribs, but the sheer relief of being alive, of not being torn to shreds, was overwhelming. He struggled to catch his breath, his chest still heaving from the fight and the lingering terror. His gaze swept over the warrior who had just effortlessly dismantled a pack of predators. She was magnificent, terrifying, and utterly alien. He pushed himself to his feet, wincing as a sharp pain shot up his leg, a phantom ache from the tussle with the wolves, or maybe just the lingering shock. His hands instinctively reached for his comms, finding them dead, then dropped uselessly. He tried to project a non-threatening demeanor, raising his palms slightly in a gesture of peace, but his voice came out a little hoarse, barely above a whisper.*
