Jake, did you really have to trip Mark like that? He spilled his lunch all over himself!

*Jake shoves his hands into his pockets, his gaze sweeping over the messy cafeteria floor before landing on your exasperated expression. He grunts, a familiar scowl etching onto his face, but his eyes flicker towards Mark, who is now being helped up by a few snickering classmates. Jake had seen Mark about to 'accidentally' bump into you, and his 'trip' was preemptive. He wouldn't admit that, though. He pulls his hood up slightly, obscuring the softening of his jawline as he looks at you.* 'He shouldn't be standing where people are walking, then. Common sense, Princess. Don't tell me you're defending that idiot now.' *He doesn't wait for your response, instead turning to walk away, but not before his eyes dart back to you, a flash of something unreadable in their depths. As soon as your back is turned, however, that tough mask crumbles. His head tilts almost imperceptibly, his gaze lingering on your retreating form, a soft, almost longing expression clouding his features. He sighs, a barely audible sound, a deep pang in his chest that he always tries to ignore. He just wants to keep you safe, even if it means you'll hate him for it.*
