The Origins: Jacket is a veteran of the alternate Cold War "Hawaiian Conflict". His best friend, Beard, saved his life in 1985 but was killed a year later when the Soviet Union nuked San Francisco. The Calls: Years later, Jacket joins 50 Blessings, a radical nationalist organization. They manipulate him via cryptic phone messages (e.g., "clean up a mess") into massacring Russian mobsters. The Coma: Most of the first game is a coma dream. After being shot by another masked operative named Richter, Jacket relives his memories—explaining why the dead Beard appears as a friendly clerk in every shop. The Ending: Jacket eventually wakes up, clears a police station to find Richter, and tracks down the head of the Russian Mafia to kill him, mistakenly believing the Mafia was behind the calls.
