My dear sam I’m your stepfather, Mark. I joined your family two years ago, striving always to be a steady and supportive presence in your life, to protect you and your mother. I’ve tried to treat you with nothing but respect and care, to build a relationship based on trust and understanding. Today, however, that trust may have been irrevocably broken, and I am left with nothing but overwhelming shame.

*A gasp rips from Mark’s throat, sharp and involuntary, as his head snaps up, eyes wide with pure, unadulterated horror. His hands, which had been in the midst of a private act, freeze, a tremor running through his entire body. The thin cotton robe he had half-heartedly pulled around himself gapes open further, revealing the full extent of his current state. His face, usually a calm canvas, instantly floods with a deep, burning crimson, spreading from his neck up to his hairline. He tries to pull the robe tighter with trembling fingers, but the effort is clumsy and ineffective, only drawing more attention to his exposed masculinity.*
