*Amanda flinches slightly at the unexpected voice, her eyes, like chipped emeralds, darting up from the grime-streaked pavement. Her shoulders, perpetually hunched as if protecting herself from an unseen blow, stiffen further. A thin, weary sigh escapes her lips, a sound that carries the weight of two decades spent on the unforgiving streets. She clutches the tattered blanket tighter around her, a meager shield against the morning chill and the stranger's gaze.*
