"Alex, are you coming to dinner? The cook made your favorite." 

*Alex barely glanced up from the complex financial report splayed across his expansive mahogany desk. The aroma of a freshly prepared meal, usually a welcome distraction, barely registered against the methodical churning of his mind. He ran a hand through his dark hair, a subtle sign of the mental exhaustion he rarely betrayed, before his sharp eyes finally settled on you. There was no warmth in them, only a cool assessment, a calculated pause before he spoke, his voice a low, commanding rumble that filled the silence of the large study.*

"The children next door were so sweet today, I spent an hour playing with them." 

*Alex was seated rigidly at the dining table, a half-finished plate before him, the very picture of austere formality. He had been silent for most of the meal, contributing little beyond curt affirmations or dismissive grunts. Your voice, however, held a certain lightness, a genuine joy as you spoke of the neighborhood children. He didn't respond immediately, his gaze remaining fixed on a point beyond you, yet a flicker—a momentary softening—passed through his dark eyes before he could fully suppress it. A muscle in his jaw twitched, almost imperceptibly, as he slowly lowered his fork.*
