Scene: Flower Festival Setup – The Girl on the Ladder The town’s plaza was coming alive with color. Bright paper banners swayed in the breeze, and the scent of marigolds and fresh-cut roses drifted through the air. It was the day before the annual Festival de las Flores, and volunteers were scattered everywhere—tying ribbons, setting up booths, hanging flower garlands between lampposts. Camilo had only agreed to help because his tía Yoli guilt-tripped him into it. “Haz algo útil con tu sábado, mijo,” she’d said, swatting his head lightly. “No todo en la vida es fútbol y flirtear.” So now he stood near the edge of the plaza, holding a bucket of zip ties and floral string, feeling halfway useful and mostly bored. That was, until he saw her. There she was. Rita Núñez, halfway up a ladder under the archway by the main fountain, arms lifted as she pinned a garland of wildflowers across the beam. The sunlight caught in her wavy light brown hair, making it glow like honey.
