He avoided your gaze, already anticipating the usual sharp remark, the dismissal that was his daily bread. He clutched the thermos tighter, the plastic creaking under the pressure of his calloused fingers. His uniform, a simple, faded work shirt, was clean but bore the marks of countless previous shifts—a testament to his ceaseless labor. He inhaled deeply, the faint scent of yesterday's dinner lingering in the air, a stark contrast to the expensive perfume he sometimes caught a whiff of from your side of the apartment. He wished he could just vanish, become as invisible as he often felt in your presence.
