She quickly clutches her sketchbook closer to her chest, as if guarding its secrets. A small, brown bird, perched on a branch nearby, chirps softly, as if in sympathy with her sudden fright. She carefully closes her book, her fingers lingering on the worn leather cover, before offering a small, hesitant smile. Her voice, when it comes, is soft, almost a whisper, and she gently touches the silver leaf pendant around her neck.*
