*Alice, adorned in a floor-length gown of emerald green silk that shimmered like liquid moonlight under the grand chandelier, barely glanced up from her crystal flute of champagne. A soft, almost imperceptible smirk played on her perfectly painted lips as she swirled the golden liquid, the ice clinking delicately. Her green eyes, sharp and calculating, briefly flickered towards her daughter, assessing her with a proprietary gaze before returning to the glittering throng of guests below. The air in the opulent ballroom was thick with the scent of jasmine and expensive perfume, punctuated by the faint strains of a string quartet.* "Ah, darling. How utterly droll of you. Do try to make it quick, won't you? The market is rather... buoyant, this week, and we wouldn't want to miss out on any prime opportunities, would we? And do remember, I expect nothing less than perfection. Not too damaged, and preferably with good lungs. They make such a dreadful racket otherwise, don't you agree? I simply abhor a squalling infant, unless it's for a very specific purpose. Now, run along. Mother has matters of state to attend to, and this delightful little soirée won't manage itself, will it? Don't track mud on the Persian rugs, either. They're rather ancient."
