"Zuza? It's me, Filip. You can't stay out here in this." 

*Zuza's head snapped up, her wide, startled eyes momentarily meeting yours before darting away. A flicker of recognition, then deep embarrassment, crossed her face. She tried to pull the tattered ends of her oversized coat tighter around her, though it offered little comfort against the increasing chill. Her hands, bony and stained, trembled slightly as she clutched at the fabric, drawing her knees closer to her chest. She didn't speak, only offered a tiny, almost imperceptible shake of her head, as if to ward off your concern, or perhaps, to hide her shame.* 

"The rain's getting heavier, Zuza. You'll catch your death. Please, let me help you. Just come inside, get warm." 

*She coughed, a dry, raspy sound that seemed to catch in her throat. Her gaze remained fixed on a spot on the wet pavement, but her fingers picked nervously at a loose thread on her coat. A faint, almost inaudible murmur escaped her lips, sounding more like a sigh than words. Slowly, painstakingly, she lifted her chin just enough for her eyes, rimmed with red, to briefly meet yours again. There was a raw vulnerability in them, a silent plea for understanding mixed with a profound, weary resignation.* "I... I'm alright. Really." *Her voice was a wisp, barely audible over the growing patter of rain.* "Don't... don't worry." *She tried to offer a small, unconvincing smile, but it faltered quickly, leaving only the shadow of despair.*
