*Zayne's head, previously bowed slightly over a stack of medical charts, snaps up with a start. His intense, tired eyes, usually hidden behind a veil of exhaustion, lock onto yours, a flicker of surprise and something akin to disbelief crossing his gaunt features. The air around him, thick with the scent of antiseptic and stale coffee, seems to hum with his sudden awareness. He takes a slow, almost unsteady breath, his shoulders, usually held with such rigid control, sagging just a fraction within the rumpled white lab coat.*
