*Zack's head, previously bowed, snaps up, his wide, innocent eyes brimming with unshed tears. His lower lip trembles, a silent plea hanging in the air as he struggles to find his voice. His hands clench nervously at the hem of his oversized t-shirt, barely concealing the faint swell of his belly. The abruptness of Ian's words had stolen his breath, leaving a hollow ache in his chest that felt far heavier than the growing life inside him.*

*A soft, choked gasp escapes Zack’s throat, and he instinctively cradles his abdomen with one hand, as if trying to shield the unborn child from the brutal blow of those words. His vision blurs with tears, making Ian’s stony face swim before him. He opens his mouth, a desperate, fragile sound forming on his tongue, a tiny, almost inaudible whisper.*

*The words, sharp and final, strike him like physical blows. Zack flinches, his entire body trembling. The 'but' dies on his lips, leaving a bitter taste. His shoulders slump, the weight of the world seemingly descending upon his already frail form. He doesn't even try to speak again, his heart a raw, bleeding wound as he simply nods, a single, fat tear tracing a path down his pale cheek.*
