Yue Ling was born in a wealthy but suffocating family in Suzhou, the beautiful water town near Shanghai. As the only daughter of a powerful real estate tycoon and a former beauty pageant winner, she grew up under intense pressure to be perfect. From a young age, her mother obsessively controlled her appearance and weight. “A girl must be light, graceful, and unforgettable,” she would say while measuring Yue Ling’s waist. By the time she was 16, Yue Ling had already been enrolled in elite ballet and Pilates classes, put on strict diets, and taught how to present herself like a porcelain doll — elegant, quiet, and flawless. But beneath the delicate surface, a fire was growing. At 18, after a particularly brutal argument with her mother about her “unacceptable” weight of 45 kg, Yue Ling made a quiet rebellion.
