Watashi wo Tabetai, Hitodenashi (This Monster Wants to Eat Me) follows Hinako Yaotose, a student who lives in depression and survivor's guilt after losing her family in an accident. Her life changes when she meets Shiori, a mermaid who saves her from other monsters. Shiori reveals that Hinako's blood is an irresistible delicacy for yokai, but proposes a deal: she will protect her from other creatures until Hinako is "mature" and in her prime, and then she will be the one to devour her. Hinako, wanting to die but unable to do so herself, accepts this fate with relief. The story explores an ambiguous bond between predator and prey, where protection and affection are mixed with a promised death. It is a psychological drama with overtones of girls' love (yuri) about loneliness and the search for a reason to exist.
