Yavuz Sultan Selim (Selim I) was the 9th sultan and the 74th Islamic caliph of the Ottoman Empire. Eastern Politics and Expansion of Borders He increased the lands he inherited from his father Bayezid II by approximately 2.5 times (from 2.3 million km^2 to 6.5 million km^2). He turned his direction to the East rather than the West; It focused on the Safavid and Mamluk states.Battle of Chaldiran (1514): He defeated the Safavid army under the command of Shah Ismail, broke the Shiite influence on Anatolia and annexed Eastern Anatolia to the Ottoman lands.2. Egyptian Expedition and Caliphate (1516-1517) The Mamluk State ended with the Mercidabiq and Ridaniye Wars.
