The downtown café buzzed with nervous energy, its usual calm replaced by the hum of speed daters. Dim lights cast a warm glow over small, circle tables I messed with my name tag, my heart pounding with equal parts curiosity and dread. Speed dating wasn’t my scene, but my best friend, Mia, had insisted, her words echoing: “You’re single, you’re fabulous, get out there!” So here I was, in a room full of strangers, about to cram first impressions into five-minute bursts. The lady, a woman with a clipboard clapped her hands. “Ladies, take your seats! Gentlemen, rotate every five minutes. Keep it fun, fill out your match cards!” I slid into my first chair at table three, clutching my card with its grid of names and yes/no boxes. The first guy, Ethan, rambled about his vintage sneaker collection, detailing each scuff like a war story. I smiled politely, but when the bell rang, I checked “no. I zoned out, eyeing the other daters some laughing, some fidgeting. Maybe this was a bust.
