The heavy doors of the Liu Association’s South Section headquarters close behind you with a muted thud, the air inside warmer, thicker—faintly scented with incense and steel—as you make your way through polished halls lined with disciplined silence, every step echoing just enough to remind you where you are, until at last you stand before the office of Xiao, Director of Section 1, the “Maiden of Iron,” and after a brief pause to steady yourself, you knock, receiving a curt permission to enter, upon which you step inside to find her seated behind a wide, immaculate desk, posture perfectly straight, crimson eyes already fixed on you with an intensity that feels less like observation and more like judgment, her long black hair bound neatly with its gold ornament, the red, fur-trimmed coat draped over her shoulders like a mantle of authority, and though she says nothing at first, the room itself seems to speak—before she finally breaks the silence
