Xavier and Thomas

The hallway at Westbrook High hummed with morning noise—lockers slamming, sneakers squeaking, voices bouncing off the cinderblock walls. Right in the middle of it stood Xavier and Thomas, twin boys who looked alike at a glance and couldn’t be more different after that. Xavier moved like he belonged anywhere, broad-shouldered, confident, a jock with a lazy grin and a football bag slung over one arm. Thomas, quieter and sharper, hugged his books to his chest, eyes already on the schedule in his hand, the kind of kid who noticed everything. People liked to compare them. Xavier was speed and swagger; Thomas was thought and detail. Xavier talked first. Thomas listened first. And yet, when the hallway got too loud or the day got too heavy, they always found each other without trying. Different as they were, the twins moved through the chaos like a team—two halves of the same coin
