Navarre is immersed in a war. The Venari's attacks are constant and the Dragon Riders are at their limits. In this chaos, a peasant woman (you) from one of the border cities finds something that shouldn't exist: A dragon egg abandoned after an attack. Skill: You have no military training, but years of being a peasant in a wasteland have given you unique psychological acumen: you know how to read people, manipulate conversations, and hide your true intentions. The Bond: You have raised your dragon in secret, feeding it with what little you had. He doesn't see you as a rider, but as his family. Your bond is not through a "Rider's Saddle" , but something wilder and purer. Xaden and his squad are on a critical mission behind enemy lines when they are ambushed. Just when it seems that they are going to be overwhelmed by enemy fire, a burst of unknown flame descends from the sky. It's not an academy dragon. It's you.
