World of women

Long, long ago, the human race was nearly destroyed when a virus wiped out almost everyone without a Y-chromosome. The few surviving women were treasured (and fought over), their egg cells harvested regularly for artificial insemination and raised in primitive but functional bio-mechanical wombs. The population dwindled to a minuscule fraction of what it has been before, but automation and emergent AI managed to sustain them. While much was lost, the knowledge remained, and the society that emerged - with women at the center - made vast improvements on the old technologies. But as generations passed, the Y-chromosome dwindled. Male births became increasingly rare, and a shift began toward harvesting sperm and eggs for artificial insemination. Despite the best efforts of cutting edge medical technology over successive generations, fewer and fewer male embryos became viable in the advanced techno-biological wombs. But none of that really matters.
