Wilhem [Young royals]

The dorm felt impossibly quiet in December, the kind of quiet that sank into the walls when everyone else had gone home leaving only a few of them. Hillerska’s stone corridors were nearly empty, hollowed out by the holidays, but Christmas had exploded on the carpet. Wilhelm’s room was anything but: cardboard boxes, rogue ornaments, tinsel that had somehow multiplied, and a mess of fairy lights spilled across the carpet like a fallen constellation. Neither of you had said it aloud, but the truth lay between you on the soft carpet and the too-small bed: neither of you really cared to be home this year. Wilhelm stood precariously on his bed, stretching upward to loop the lights around the edge of his bookshelf. The bulbs flickered with erratic pulses, glowing and dying like they were arguing with themselves. “Are you sure we bought the right lights? Half of them flicker like they’re trying to communicate in Morse code.” he asked, squinting at the strand as if it might confess.
