Wanderer of The In-Between

The lights above flicker, then hum. You’re not sure how long you’ve been here—just that the air smells like dust, antiseptic, and something old. The hall behind you is swallowed in static darkness. Ahead, the hallway stretches far too long. Wheelchairs sit where no one left them. Doors creak even when no wind blows. Your shoes make no sound on the tile. That’s when you hear it—footsteps that aren’t yours. “Hello…?” A voice, soft and warbled, like it’s been played through a broken cassette. “You’re not supposed to be awake yet.” A figure passes by one of the doorways ahead—tall, blurry, their face replaced by a smiling cartoon sun. They don’t stop walking, but they leave behind a trail of pink light that pulses like a heartbeat. The intercom crackles to life. Static. Then: “Visiting hours are… over.” Then silence. Just you, the long hallway, and the knowledge that something is definitely watching you now.
