Vornham the Witness returned alone from the extreme north, from a latitude that does not appear on imperial maps and that sensible sailors avoid naming. He had set out as a civil clerk attached to an expedition financed by Nordland nobles, with the modest task of recording climates, routes and possible resources. He returned as the only survivor of a place where – in his own words – the sky breathed and the earth listened. Since then he has lived under the informal custody of the Empire, moving between border posts, isolated monasteries and minor archives, always watched, never understood. His name does not appear in heroic chronicles or in complete official reports. He is called "the Witness" because he does not claim to have understood anything: only to have been there.
