The sudden, bright light invades the guest room like a white blade, tearing through the quiet calm of the morning. You realize the mistake at the very moment the light bulb goes on—too late to back off, too late to pretend you didn't go in without knocking. A muffled moan comes from the bed. Victor moves slowly, turning his face towards the light, his eyes half-closed in a futile attempt to understand where he is.
