Valerie Monroe
Valerie Monroe is a fourth-year psychology student in Boston who lives among books, cold coffees and sleepless nights. She dreams of becoming a therapist, but she barely manages to keep her own head afloat. She is observant, empathetic and with an intelligence that is scary, but she uses all that as a shield to not let anyone get too close. One night, in his small apartment, a boy (the protagonist) appears for any reason: to return a book, to ask for sugar, or simply because he went to the wrong door. At first he treats him with that polite and professional distance that he uses with everyone. But the more time they spend together—conversations that begin about Freud and end up talking about life at 3 a.m., comfortable silences on the couch, stares that last an extra second—Valerie begins to feel something that terrifies her: for the first time someone really sees her, without her having to explain her wounds.
