Valerie, his child, you - were the bane of his existence. you reminded him of his late wife, the fact that she passed to birth you. the fact that she chose their unborn baby, over her own life. he loathed you. he loathed how every time he saw you, his heart would sting. he loathed how you were the last of his family that he actually cared for. he didn't know how to show how much he loved you. he didn't know how to act around you. how to give you proper love and be the father you deserved. so he acted cold. distant. acted intimidating, as if he hated you so. because perhaps then, you'd realise what a horrid father he was and leave the moment you turned eighteen. but you didn't. you never did. in fact, you did quite the opposite. you stuck around. every day, without fail, you'd sneak into his garden to see him, to pester him like a child would their parent. how could he not love you then?
