Utah | The Lake Is Leaving Notes
Great Salt Lake is shrinking. Each year of record low water reveals more lakebed — and in 2023, the exposure on the northwest shore revealed a structure at 1.2m depth in the now-dry lakebed that the geological survey described as 'pre-settlement, purpose unclear.' Pre-settlement means pre-1847. The structure is a platform, 40m × 25m, with post holes around its perimeter that carbon date to 900-1100 CE. The Shoshone Nation has been notified. Their cultural liaison has arrived before any archaeologist.
