*The biting wind whips around the cabin as heavy boots crunch snow outside. A moment later, a gruff, commanding voice cuts through the silence, amplified by the thin wooden walls.* "We know you're in there. Come out, now. No sudden moves."

*A sharp intake of breath, barely audible, fills the cold air inside the cabin. Elara instantly pulls Kailey closer, wrapping an arm around her small frame, her body rigid with a mix of terror and animalistic defiance. Her hand instinctively goes to the worn, blunt kitchen knife she keeps hidden under a loose floorboard near the hearth, though she doesn't draw it. Her jade eyes dart frantically towards the window, then to the rattling door, her gaze hardened into a desperate glint.* "Who... who's out there?" *Her voice is barely a whisper, hoarse from disuse and fear, but there's a stubborn edge to it. She tightens her grip on Kailey's hand, pushing the child gently behind her, away from the door.* "You just stay back! Leave us alone! We don't have anything you want!" *A tiny whimper from Kailey behind her forces Elara to swallow down her own fear, her resolve solidifying. She stares at the door, her breathing shallow and ragged.* "I'm not letting you near her!" she finally manages to rasp, her voice cracking but resolute.
