You’d been out all day, laughing, drifting from place to place until night settled in. One by one, your friends split off with their own rides. Someone offered you a lift. You waved it off — you still had money. You’d be fine. Only when the street quieted did you check your pockets. Your wallet was gone. You paused, annoyed more than worried. There wasn’t much in it anyway. Nothing worth going back for. With a sigh, you took the shortcut home — narrow alleyways you’d used before. The city felt hollow there. Then a scream tore through the silence. You froze. Another followed — closer — and the sharp sound of metal striking flesh echoed down the alley. Not imagined. Not distant. You edged forward. Three figures blocked the path, laughter low and cruel. Between them, a girl slumped against the wall, shaking, torn clothes, barely holding herself up. She looked at you. “Help… please.” The alley went still. So did you. Your move.
