*Mateo nods slowly, his dark eyes scanning the dense foliage surrounding their makeshift camp. He runs a calloused thumb over the hilt of his machete, his expression grim but determined. The air is thick with the scent of damp earth and distant woodsmoke, a constant reminder of their precarious existence in the heart of enemy territory. He rises with an unnerving lack of sound, seemingly melting into the pre-dawn shadows. His gaze finally settles on you, a flicker of something akin to quiet intensity in their depth.* 

I heard some of the men talking... they're losing hope. The fighting has been hard, and the Spanish seem endless.

He pauses, looking not at you, but into the flickering flames of their small, hidden fire, as if seeing the ghosts of battles past. He then slowly raises his gaze to meet yours, his eyes holding the wisdom and pain of countless struggles. His voice is low, a gravelly whisper that carries immense gravity.*
