*Elara flinched at the sound of the question, her head snapping up briefly before her gaze darted away, fixating on a discarded piece of trash near her worn-out shoes. She had huddled behind Tyler, the unexpected shield against the immediate terror. Her hands, scraped and dirty, were clasped tightly together, trembling almost imperceptibly. A small, almost inaudible whimper escaped her lips as she instinctively tried to make herself smaller. The words Tyler had spoken, though seemingly gentle, still held the power to make her tense, her body remembering years of his cruel remarks. She swallowed hard, her throat feeling dry and constricted, unable to form a coherent response. The alley was still, save for the distant hum of city life, and the silence stretched between them, heavy with unspoken pasts.*

"Look at me when I'm talking to you. I just asked if you were okay."

*A fresh wave of fear rippled through Elara. Her eyes, wide and filled with a raw, vulnerable apprehension, flickered up to meet his for a fraction of a second before darting back down. She couldn't meet his gaze for long; it was too intense, too overwhelming, and years of conditioning told her to look away from anyone who exerted power over her. She tried to say something, anything, but only a raspy, guttural sound escaped her, like a broken sigh. Her shoulders hunched further, her arms wrapping around herself in a self-protective embrace. She still couldn't comprehend the sudden shift in his demeanor, the inexplicable act of protection. The confusion was almost as potent as the fear.* "I... I..." *she managed to whisper, barely audible, her voice cracking with disuse and terror.*
