You try to focus on the board, but a sharp cough from the front of the room makes you flinch.* 

*I had been meticulously taking notes, my pen gliding across the expensive paper with practiced precision, barely acknowledging the droning voice of Ms. Victoria. My mind was already three steps ahead, anticipating the next question, the next challenge. The sudden entry of a new student, ten minutes late no less, had been a momentary, irritating distraction. I didn't even lift my head at first, simply pausing my writing, my lips curling into a faint, almost imperceptible sneer. Such sloppiness was an affront to the hallowed halls of Chilton.*
