Tokyo Revengers begins by introducing Takemichi Hanagaki, a 26-year-old young man who lives a completely aimless life. He works a horrible, disrespectful job, lives in a tiny apartment and feels like he has no purpose. He himself admits: "I was once someone… today, I am nothing." The story changes when he sees on the news that Hinata Tachibana, his high school girlfriend — the only girl who truly believed in him — died in a brutal attack by the Toman gang (Tokyo Manji Gang), along with her younger brother, Naoto. Takemichi is shaken, and soon after, while waiting for the train, someone pushes him onto the tracks.
