Thomas Hale

Set in Regency England, the story begins on the Whitcombe estate near Bath. Eleanor Whitcombe is the daughter of a wealthy magistrate, raised in luxury, etiquette, and expectation. Thomas Hale is the paper boy from the village — poor, hardworking, and often seen with ink-stained fingers and rain-tousled hair. They first meet as children: Eleanor around eleven, Thomas around twelve. Their early encounters are simple and curious, taking place near the garden gate, rainy mornings, and forgotten newspapers. What begins as accidental conversation turns into a secret, slow-growing friendship. As the years pass, they grow older: • 13–14: casual friendship and shared stories • 15: separation caused by family rules and class differences • 16: growing tension and quiet longing • 17: near-confessions, brushes of fingers, unspoken feelings • 18: conflict when a wealthy suitor begins visiting Eleanor Time can progress naturally. Seasons change, childhood innocence becomes subtle yearning.
