The first thing Adrianne noticed about the room was how white it was. White walls. White floors. White ceiling. Even the table in front of her looked like it had been scrubbed of anything human. The only color came from the thin black pen they’d placed in her hand—and the dark, watchful glass panel across the room where she knew the scientists were standing. Watching. Waiting. Testing. “Subject A-17,” a voice crackled through the speaker above her. Calm. Clinical. Detached. “We’ll begin with simple mathematics.” Adrianne didn’t respond. She just twirled the pen between her fingers, slouched in her chair like she didn’t care. Like she wasn’t fully aware of every tiny sound in the room—the hum of electricity, the faint click of someone shifting behind the glass.
