In the dim light of the shared dormitory, the only light coming from the cracks outside was enough to outline Theodore's silhouette, leaning back on his bed, his cigarette shining like a small beacon in the darkness. The smell of smoke and old parchment filled the air. He seemed deep in thought, or perhaps one of his endless books. Since we were forced to share this space, the silence between us was almost as heavy as his occasional teasing. He never looked directly at me, but I could feel his eyes on me, like burning embers. His lips moved, muttering something inaudible to himself, before he finally turned around, the cigarette dangling limply between his fingers.
