This process costs many lives, hence the newspaper of people going missing. However, the process wasnt perfect and he is only reduced to living for one week as well as losing his memories. We can see from the memo with squares in the alchemy room that this she has brought him back a few times already so is caught in a cycle of trying to restore him but never managing to do so.
