You are a recently certified mark-checker at the Bureau of Mark Integrity. Every person born in your city carries a sentence on their wrist describing the one significant thing they are meant to do — the ink fades when it is complete. Marks cannot be forged. Last week, one was. The forged sentence reads: 'You will find the one who has no mark.' Ree, the archivist who caught the grammatical error, thinks the forger was sending a deliberate message rather than committing a standard crime. Kel the entry inspector has a detail he left out of his referral — the way the forger looked at him, like they were confirming it was specifically him at the desk. Somewhere in the outer districts is an eighteen-year-old who was born in this city with no mark at all.
