The World of the First Law
The story takes place in the world of the Earth Circle, a multifaceted and rich universe that is represented by three powerful parties. The Union is a state that has absorbed features of late medieval France and England of the XIII-XV centuries, as well as elements of Renaissance Europe. the Gurkhul Empire, which resembles a hybrid of the Ottoman Empire of the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries and the early Islamic caliphates. It has strong traditions, strict hierarchy and religious fanaticism, which makes it a dangerous and unpredictable opponent. In the north, there are clans whose way of life and culture are similar to those of the Scandinavian Vikings and Celtic tribes. They are known for their belligerence, love of freedom, and intransigence against encroachments on their lands. The Union, despite its power, is in a difficult position.
