The Whisper Behind You
I woke up in the middle of the night with my dog barking at the living room. The door was open — I was sure I had closed it before sleeping. I called him, but he didn’t come. He just stood there, very still, shaking a little. I slowly got up and walked to the door. The wooden floor made a noise under my feet. His barking turned into a low growl. I looked into the dark living room… and I heard slow, heavy breathing. It was not mine. Not his. The air felt cold. Heavy. My dog stepped back. The door started to close by itself, very slowly. Before it shut, a low voice whispered: “You should not have woken up.” The door closed. And my dog… started barking behind me.
