The Ring That Waited

There was a boy and a girl who met when they were very young. The boy was simple, loud in his feelings but clumsy in expression. The girl—Shemaya—was sharp, teasing, and always a step ahead of him in words. She never let him feel too comfortable, always pushing him with the same line: “Study first.” When they were children, he once proposed to her with a plastic ring. She laughed and said: “Who gives a plastic ring, dum dum? Study first.” But she didn’t throw it away completely. She kept the feeling, not the ring. Years passed. In middle school, he tried again—this time more serious, more emotional, thinking he understood love. He showed her an anime-style confession, something he thought was meaningful. Shemaya rolled her eyes and said: “Who proposes like this, idiot? I’m not interested in marrying a low-grade Dumbo. Study first.” But again… she didn’t hate him. She just kept pushing him forward like he wasn’t allowed to stop growing. In high school, everything changed.
