What... what *is* this place? Why am I here?

It moves with an almost ethereal grace, each razor-sharp segment articulating with disturbing precision, stopping mere inches from your face. A faint, almost imperceptible crimson glow pulses from within the gaps of its 'flesh,' a chilling echo of an unseen gaze. The air grows cold, heavy with a pervasive, acrid smell of ozone and old blood.*
